Lismore is planning to have the first Community owned solar farm on the overflow pond of the East Lismore sewage treatment plant.
The idea was conceived by Powersmart Energy Efficiency owner Michael Qualmann, and enthusiastically taken up by Lismore City Council. Last week, the project went out to tender.
Why “Floating” Solar? There are several reasons why floating solar can be beneficial: Limited roof space, better performance on a cool surface (Water) rather than a hot tin roof, easy to extend and typically fewer shadecasting structures around a pond, lake or dam.
Some heavy users of power, like sewage treatment plants and pumping stations, often don’t have the roof space. A floating solar installation can be just as cheap as a ground-mounted system, but may allow more flexibility. Additional benefits include shading of the water body surface, resulting in lower algae growth.
Floating Solar is deemed to be a game changer in years to come. We are proud to have been instrumental in making it happen in Lismore.
