Imagine a nation that has unlimited energy streaming down form the sun almost every day. Plus plenty of wind along the coasts, plains and mountain ridges. This fuel is free. Now imagine incredibly expensive power stations that take 5-10 years to plan and approve and another 10-15 years to build, producing the most expensive energy this country has ever seen. Not to mention the ongoing security risks, protection from terrorism, 20,000 years of safe storage for the waste….
You get it? If nuclear would ever go online, by that time we’ve totally ruined our climate beyond control. We need to act now, and we have the perfect technologies for that. You will say ‘but what about wind and solar being intermittent? Yes, for that we have batteries. Lithium for now, other, more advanced technologies in the future. If we really put our mind to it, as scientists all over the world do, we will have safe, reliable and cheap battery storage well before the first nuclear reactor goes online.
So why are some politicians so pro-nuclear? Because they are the mouthpiece of the coal and gas industry that want to keep their dated and dirty assets going for as long as possible while we wait for the most expensive form of energy we ever had.
